In this project, we delve deep into the vibrant essence of Jalan Kayu, Singapore, through the lens of organic growth, spectacle, and everyday life. Harnessing the power of photography and creative coding, we embark on a visual exploration that transcends conventional boundaries of perception. Through immersive projections and intricate visuals, we peel back the layers of urban reality, unveiling the hidden narratives and untold stories that pulsate beneath the surface of this dynamic community. Join us as we unravel the organic evolution of Jalan Kayu, revealing its intricate connection with nature and the ever-evolving landscape of its identity.
Jalan Kayu today holds a significant place in Singapore's cultural tapestry, owing to two pivotal reasons. It served as the primary artery leading to the expansive British-built military compound in Seletar, alongside the neighboring Seletar Airport, embedding it firmly into the historical fabric of the nation. Secondly, its allure blossomed from the humble yet cherished roadside eateries offering delectable servings of roti prata, gradually earning widespread acclaim as some of Singapore's finest.
Over time, Jalan Kayu became famous for its outstanding food and laid-back atmosphere, becoming a household name for culinary excellence. Its colonial heritage is evident in the Tudorbethan-style houses and British 19th-century design elements that adorn its streets, echoing its rich history and colonial legacy. These architectural nuances serve as silent testaments to the neighborhood's rich history, weaving together the threads of its colonial legacy into the fabric of everyday life in Jalan Kayu.
It's strikingly evident that nature seamlessly intertwines with the community, having coexisted for decades. What's particularly noteworthy is the residents' nonchalant embrace of this natural presence, evident in their daily lives. This harmonious relationship with the surrounding environment is palpable, reflecting a deep-rooted connection that has endured over time. This symbiotic relationship with nature is not merely incidental but intrinsic to the fabric of everyday life in Jalan Kayu.
From the lush greenery that lines the streets to the sprawling trees that provide shade and tranquility, nature's influence permeates every aspect of community existence. It's as if the community and the natural world have forged an unspoken pact, each enriching the other in a perpetual dance of mutual benefit.One cannot help but marvel at the resilience of this coexistence, where concrete jungle meets verdant oasis.
To create the artifact, I utilized TouchDesigner, a platform that allowed me to visually represent the organic growth of Jalan Kayu's identity. In essence, I sought to capture how the essence of Jalan Kayu has evolved naturally over time. This evolution is not just about physical changes but also encompasses the intertwining of community dynamics, architectural developments, and the presence of nature. Jalan Kayu's identity is deeply rooted in its history, culture, and environment, which have shaped its unique character.
As the images unfold, they serve as a reminder of the interconnectedness between human life and the ecosystems we inhabit. In this way, the project becomes a window into the collective consciousness of the community, revealing its values, aspirations, and enduring connection to the land. The resulting visuals serve as a testament to the resilience and beauty of nature, while also highlighting the indelible imprint it leaves on the identity of Jalan Kayu.

The presence of colonial buildings and the furnitures that can be found in the neighbourhood adds a layer of depth to the narrative. Their stately presence serves as a reminder of Jalan Kayu's rich history and cultural heritage, blending seamlessly with the lush greenery to create a timeless tapestry of tradition and modernity.
